Future Oceans

Inspired by the pioneering 360 work of world renowned photographer, adventurer, and film maker, Michael Muller, Future Oceans challenged participants to imagine an underwater environment based on Muller’s film Into the Now.

Participants made 360 films, built underwater robots, and learned how to program and create with head mounted displays.  Using laser cutters, weaving, and drawing techniques students were able to create virtual worlds using tangible materials.   Deploying 360 cameras on submersibles built from PVC pipe, participants explored today’s ocean while learning to sail operate robotics off the California coastline.

Participants were given a chance to practice rapid prototyping in headset using a suite of 3D design tools for virtual reality including Tilt Brush, Gravity Sketch, and Google Blocks.  All tools and techniques were combined using A-Frame on glitch.com to create virtual reality websites that could be visited on any internet connected device. These immersive websites tell the story of a problem and innovation in the ocean past, present, and future.
